Self taught writing

Today on our way home, in the car, the children had some colouring sheets and crayons to keep them occupied.  Daughter age 6 who is great at math but can’t read or write got really excited after she wrote her sisters name backwards on the paper.  I was really impressed as she’s never shown she even recognises letters and we’ve tried a few times to ask what each letter is of the alphabet, showing her on paper.  After reading an article that as long as reading material was available, children’s natural curiosity and ability to learn would win and a child would learn to read by themselves (although I’m always available if she wants me to read to her or teach her, she’s never asked me to yet)
